During an emergency, kaiako may need to shelter in place, manage a lockdown or evacuate before outside support is available. Having suitable supplies organised and ready means they can focus on keeping tamariki safe and cared for.

The Kōhanga Emergency Readiness Backpack has been developed through co design with early childhood settings and practical learning from completed projects. This helps ensure the contents reflect the needs of younger tamariki and the people caring for them.
We support kōhanga reo, early childhood centres, playcentres, Pacific early learning centres, rural and community childcare providers, and home based educators throughout Aotearoa.
Good to know
Who is the Kōhanga pack designed for?
- It is designed for kōhanga reo and other early childhood settings, supporting 10+ tamariki and three adults. If you are preparing a primary school classroom, the Classroom Survival Backpack may be a better fit.
Can we order on a purchase order or invoice?
- Yes. Many organisations order this way. Get in touch and we will help with the paperwork.
Can you help with funding?
- In many cases, yes. We can provide quotes and supporting documentation for grant and funding applications.
Is the handbook in te reo?
- The pack includes a children’s reading book in te reo Māori. The emergency handbook is currently in English, but we can talk with you about customisation for your setting.
How is this different from the Classroom pack?
- The Classroom Survival Backpack is designed for school aged children and classrooms of up to 25 students. The Kōhanga pack is tailored for younger tamariki and mixed age early childhood settings, with infant care items such as formula, bottles and nappies.
