Manaaki backpacks — ensuring hauora, disability, and social service staff are prepared to keep themselves and their clients safe in any emergency

Hauora providers, disability services, and community organisations have a responsibility to protect both staff and the vulnerable people they care for. Yet equipping frontline workers with the right safety resources can be complex and time-consuming. That’s why we’ve created the Manaaki Backpack — a ready-to-go backpack designed specifically for outreach teams working in the community.

Each durable, waterproof backpack contains the essentials staff need for both everyday safety and disaster response — including first aid supplies, food rations, water and purification, lighting, communication tools, PPE, hygiene essentials, and a practical handbook. Whether staff are dealing with a power outage at a client’s home or a large-scale civil emergency, the Manaaki Pack ensures they are ready to respond with confidence.

Suitable for hauora outreach staff, disability support workers, social service providers, and community care teams.

FAQs

What kind of situations can your backpacks be used for?

Our Manaaki Packs are designed to support hauora, disability, and social service staff across a wide range of emergencies. Outreach workers often face everyday disruptions such as power outages, road closures, or clients needing urgent care, but they also need to be prepared for larger events like earthquakes, floods, severe storms, and civil emergencies.

Each pack contains essential resources — first aid supplies, food rations, water and purification, emergency lighting, hygiene essentials, PPE, and communication tools — ensuring staff can continue caring for vulnerable clients while keeping themselves safe. Whether working through daily challenges or responding during a major disaster, the Manaaki Pack provides a practical, easy-to-carry solution for frontline workers.

How much do the backpacks weigh?

Approximate weight: 5.3kg

How long will the backpack last?

We have filled the backpacks with components that have a shelf life of a minimum 5 years if stored in a cool and dry environment. We offer a replenishment service where we will replace any expiring items with brand new items for a nominal fee. We will contact you prior to your 5 year purchase anniversary to discuss. If you need to replace anything sooner please contact us via email or livechat.

What else will I need to add to my kit?

Every organisation has unique needs, so while the Manaaki Pack covers the essentials, you may want to add items specific to your staff or client base.

  • Outreach staff may want to include prescription medications, agency forms, or cultural care items.

  • Disability and supported living services might add spare hearing aid batteries, communication cards, or additional PPE.

  • Organisations can also store extra bottled water, specialist medical supplies, or site-specific emergency equipment.

Each Manaaki Pack is designed with extra room so your staff can add organisation-specific essentials — such as medications, documents, cultural items, or specialised equipment. This flexibility ensures the pack can be tailored to your unique needs while still carrying the full set of core safety items.
